Around 4500 BC, people near the Black Sea at Varna, in today’s Bulgaria, buried their dead with hundreds of gold objects, among the oldest worked gold ever found. One grave alone held about a thousand pieces. Ours is a small gold disc with a raised centre, the shape that recurs across those graves.
