In 1839 Prince Albert gave Queen Victoria an engagement ring he had designed himself: a gold snake, a symbol of eternal love, set with an emerald, her birthstone. She is said to have been buried wearing it. Snake rings became the fashion of her age. Ours is the coil and the head, in metal alone.
